East-side Journey: Jaw-Dropping Views and Lush Landscapes

It's easy to loose yourself in the wonders of eastern Madeira - head inland and you'll arrive to a maze of rural roads that wind from one stunning valley to the next, with breathtaking views at every turn. Despite the rugged terrain, this part of the island is dotted with charming villages and hamlets that give a sense of scale to the vast landscapes and are perfect spots for a leisurely lunch.

Exploring Madeira's east coast is like stepping back into the early days of this Atlantic gem's colonization. In 1419, Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira landed on what is now the municipality of Machico.

Lush, green, enchanting and untamed are the perfect words to describe the north-eastern side of Madeira Island. You'll spot rugged cliffs where mountains plunge dramatically into the sea.

In contrast, São Lourenco is a beautifully barren, desolate finger of desert terrain stretching into the Atlantic. The peninsula offers a glimpse of a habitat less common on the rest of Madeira and more common on the neighboring Deserted Islands visible to the south.

When you're ready, we'll make our way back, leaving you plenty of time to ask questions, take photos and make the most of this private experience.
